Male Waxing FAQ’s

Have a question about waxing?  If we haven’t answered it in the FAQ’s click the button to ask us something else. We will email you a private answer.

Although males have more hair the areas we usually wax – back, chest & shoulders are large flat places so we can be very quick. We do charge a little extra if you’re extra hairy because basically it takes longer.

Yes sir! And the hairier you are the more it hurts. The good news is the longer you wax the less it hurts. The first wax is always the most uncomfortable. As experienced waxing people our super-fast waxing is less painful. Taking a couple of Panadol (not ibuprofen as thins the blood) prior to your wax may help.

Waxing pulls hair from the root allowing your hair to grow back more sparse and much softer. Waxing is considered a form of exfoliation and removes all the dead skin cells leaving your skin soft and smooth. It also enhances the visibility of muscle definition.

All redness should subside within a few hours up to 24 hours after you wax.

You should come in about every four to five weeks or when the hair is about 2mm long.  If you stay on a regular schedule your hair will become sparse and less coarse over time.

We use strip wax (also known as soft wax) for larger and non-sensitive areas. Strip wax comes in a cartridge and is heated by being inserted into a cartridge heater. We use a new cartridge for every client. The warmed wax is thinly rolled onto your skin (like a deodorant roller) and a fresh, clean wax strip (cloth made from bamboo) is pressed firmly against your waxed skin. The hairs stick to the cloth which is then ripped off and the hairs come too.

No, most of the wax comes off on the cloth. We remove any residual stickiness with a professional after-wax oil then use an in-grown hair retardant and a moisturising cream to finish. Your skin will look and feel great.

We ask you to be clean, wax grips clean hair better. Best not to moisturise or use oils. Our advice: It can make it easier if you gently exfoliate the night before to get rid of dead skin build-up around the hair follicles and a warm bath or shower shortly before your appointment can make the skin softer allowing for easier hair removal. Take a Panadol (not ibuprofen because it’s a blood thinner) about 20 minutes before if you’re worried about pain.

Generally wait at least 2-3 weeks since the last time you shaved so the hair will be long enough to wax. (think Basmati rice grain length.)

We’re trying to stop any infections getting into the open follicles so try not to touch the area. We recommend no heavy exercise, where you will break out in a sweat, within 2 to 3 hours to give the follicles time to heal and close. Swimming, spray tanning, and saunas are not recommended within 12 hours of waxing. Wait 2 to 4 weeks after waxing for any deep exfoliation of the waxed area such as microdermabrasion, peels or laser treatments.

No, although things may be a little irritated for an hour or two after the wax so looser, more comfortable clothing may be wise but certainly not essential.

Your therapist will decide if the waxing treatment can be done but following is a list of the things where we may not be able to wax you (some you may need to tell us about):

  • Skin disorders, e.g. psoriasis, dermatitis
  • Cuts, abrasions or broken skin
  • Bruising or recent haemorrhage
  • Diabetes
  • Defective circulation
  • Folliculitus
  • Recent scar tissue
  • Fractures or sprains
  • Severe varicose veins
  • Loss of skin sensation
  • Self tan
  • Heat rash
  • Warts/skin tags
  • Hairy moles
  • Sun burn/sun bedding
  • Loose/thin skin
  • Some medications

So long as the tattoo is fully healed the waxing will not affect your tattoo. In fact waxing will make the tattoo look better and provides a mild exfoliation of dead skin build-up and this can refresh a tired looking tattoo. Continue exfoliating and keep the area moisturised to make that ink look vivid.

Other than the contra-indications to waxing mentioned above we have strategies that allow us to wax sensitive or fragile skin and look after people who can’t handle pain (at all). Certainly we say avoid coffee and we prefer you don’t use numbing cream however let us know about your concerns and we will be extra careful. We also understand the potential for after wax break-outs and infections which is why we are super hygienic.

Yes it’s certainly possible. Ingrown hairs are common after waxing because the hair gets removed from “under the skin” and the new hair can curl up if the skin surface is blocked from dead skin cell build-up and even from tight clothing. We will recommend one of our ingrown hair prevention products and regular exfoliation with a quality mitt as the usual course of action.

But if you have a nasty ingrown don’t go digging around with tweezers as this can lead to infection. We would recommend you see a doctor or nurse so the hair can be released in a sterile environment and antibiotic medication can be prescribed if necessary.

Both folliculitus, an infection of the hair follicles and cellulitus, a skin infection can be contracted from waxing by bacteria entering through the temporarily open hair follicles.

Unhygenic conditions during waxing significantly increase the risk but even when every precaution has been taken there are still risks. Contamination by clothing, by touching, by exercising or swimming and even from someone with a sore throat can introduce infection.

If there’s a problem give us a call – don’t wait.

Histamine Reaction

Often the skin turns red after a wax and sometimes the hair folliciles swell and become red and irritated. This is not folliculitus but your body’s natural reaction to the “injury” caused by the waxing. The redness will go down in a few hours but if skin is very irritated use an anti-histamine or try lavender essential oil.

Folliculitus

If the red angry bumps around the hair follicles persist for more than a day and seem to be getting worse they may have become infected.

PLEASE DON”T IGNORE THESE SYMPTOMS!

Cellulitus

Is redness and swelling of the skin, most commonly on your arm or leg. The skin will be hot and tender to touch. This is a potentially much more serious infection and you can become rapidly unwell – 3 to 4 days.
